Youth Counselor

Bernalillo Academy is a sub-acute residential treatment center that serves youth between the ages of 4 and 18 with a diagnosis of Autistism Spectrum Disorder, Borderline to Severe Intellectual Impairment, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Developmental Delays and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

POSITION SUMMARY

Youth Counselors provide a safe and therapeutic environment 24/7 for students while implementing structured programming and treatment plans that include teaching skill increase while decreasing maladaptive behaviors.  Youth Counselors are responsible for data collection, progress note charting, and fostering a strengths-based milieu for students.  Bernalillo Academy uses a strength based approach that focuses on learning, practicing, and generalizing skills into more natural environments and intensive teaching to increase skills based on students’ strengths.

Bernalillo Academy has a great team of support with Unit Supervisors, House Managers, Behavioral Staff and a full Clinical Team that works together closely and believes in the promise of every child and empowering children and their families.

  • Minimum 6 months experience working with children with Autism/severe emotional disturbances/neurobiological disorders, or two years post-secondary education in a Human Service related field is required.  Education can be substituted for experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; 1-2 yrs exp preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.

Registered Nurse

Bernalillo Academy is a sub-acute residential treatment center that serves youth between the ages of 4 and 18 with a diagnosis of Autistism Spectrum Disorder, Borderline to Severe Intellectual Impairment, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, Developmental Delays and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are looking for a Registered Nurse who will provide professional nursing care to patients/students by utilizing the nursing process and skills.  Assist in implementation direct daily care of clients.  Assist other nurses and the Director of  Nursing in providing clinical leadership on the unit as assigned.  The Registered Nurse will receive supervision from the Director of Nursing.  The patient population includes but may not be limited to a specialty group of special needs patients with either cognitive disability, autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays  and behavioral challenges.

Duties include assessment of patient/students upo0n admission and throughout admission to Bernalillo Academy utilizing observational and interviewing skills.  Assist in development of individualized treatment plans in conjunction with patient/student, family and multidisciplinary teams.  Provide direct nursing care based on patient treatment plan, maintain a safe and therapeutic milieu and document on all appropriate clients care topics/events/interventions.  Evaluate and document the patient/student/family response to treatment as related to stated goals and the overall effectiveness of nursing componenets in the treatment plan while promoting the concept and image of professional nursing practice.

  • Must be able to positively interact and develop rapport with children who are developmentally delayed/autistic, their families, professional and support staff, and various levels of staff from community agencies. 
  • Must be able to maintain a calm, non-defensive, supportive attitude during crisis or potential crisis situations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas:
    • Manual dexterity to keep documentation records.
    • Able to visually and auditory monitor clients.
    • Demonstrate techniques to prevent behavior harmful to the client or others.
    • Provide behavior management in crisis situations.
    • Assess potential crisis situations and call for assistance if needed.
  •     Current State of New Mexico residency.
  •     Must have current unrestricted nursing license in the state of New Mexico from The  NM Board of Nursing.
  •     Preferred adolescent or children experience in a psychiatric facilty, but not required.
  • Applicant must be 21 years of age prior to employment.

 

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Bernalillo Academy officially opened its doors in April 2009 as a sub-acute residential treatment center that serves youth between the ages of 5 and 17 years with a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, Asperger's Disorder, and other Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as Emotional and Behavioral Disorders and Developmental Delays. With a licensed capacity of up to 40 beds, Bernalillo Academy is accredited by The Joint Commission(TJC) and is licensed and certified by the New Mexico Department of Children, and Youth.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Nursing department at Bernalillo Academy provides for the medical and safety needs of students. Students at Bernalillo Academy often exhibit complex psychiatric and medical conditions requiring 24/7 professional nursing care. The LPN administers medications, coordinates and completes patient care and monitors and documents student health and safety issues.

Qualifications: The candidate must possess a valid unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse License issued by the state of New Mexico State Board of Nursing. Experience in the mental health nursing industry is preferred. Must be able to deliver skilled nursing care in both routine and stressful periods.

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)

The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) conducts Functional Behavior Assessments and other identified assessments to aid in the development of Behavior Support Plans. The BCBA works with assigned staff including Registered Behavior Technician Behavior Coaches to implement and teach direct care staff to implement behavior observation systems and behavior support plans in a Sub-Acute Residential Treatment Center.

POSITION SUMMARY

The BCBA works collaboratively with all services areas to implement all aspects of behavioral programming for identified students. The BCBA concults with direct care staff and supervisory staff to ensure that daily activity schedules and behavior programs are adequate to meet needs of students. The BCBA develops and implements systems for conduction reliability on behavioral programs to ensure program effectiveness. The BCBA monitors and ensures compliance with all required internal, state, federal, and policies and procedures. The BCBA prepares reports and assists in the development of policies, plans, goals, and priorities; advises on trends, issues, developments, and future direction of behavioral programming. The BCBA presents a positive and professional image to all internal and external customers.

  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Special Education or related field.
  • Certified as BCABA or BCBA, or eligible.
  • 2 years of experience minimum working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
  • Experience with Functional Behavior Assessments and writing Behavior Support Plans.
  • Training and experience in Applied Behavior Analysis.
  • Must be able to collect, organize and present data/information clearly; utilize effective communication skills; train and direct staff; display strong clinical skills; and have a working knowledge of licencing/accrediting agency standards.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, delegate, coordinate, and provide all needed follow-up. Must have experience training employees, planning, assigning and directing work.

Human Resources Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

The Human Resources Manager performs a variety of functions relative to the smooth operation of the department. Serves as Benefits Coordinator for the facility staff; coordinates and assists in the recruitment, and selection process of new employees. This position is responsible for all record-keeping functions related to the HR Department, serves as a primary liaison to the Payroll Department; and provides technical and secretarial support to the HR Department. The HR Manager serves as a resource person to facility staff, applicants, and visitors in matters as they relate to Human Resources function and operation. This position requires the ability to perform office work directly related to management policies or general business operations; exercise discretion and independent judgment and provides regular and direct assistance to executives.
