History

In 2008, Bernalillo Academy began renovating its current location on Gibson Boulevard in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A pallet of earth colors (blues, browns and greens) was chosen to create an environment of calmness, growth and healing. The Management Team at that time chose the New Mexico sky as the theme and named the three children’s units after sky elements using their Spanish names: Estrella (Star), Luna (Moon) and Sol (Sun). Our goal has been to provide a home away from home for your child, where we all would feel comfortable enrolling our children and grandchildren if the need arose.

We built three units: one for boys under 13 years of age; one for adolescent boys through age 17 years; and one for girls ages 5-17 years. We have taken every consideration to provide a safe, therapeutic environment for your child from special lighting and intensive clinical and psychiatric treatment to security cameras in public areas.

Bernalillo Academy officially opened its doors in April 2009 as a sub-acute residential treatment center that serves youth between the ages of 5 and 17 years with a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, and other Autism Spectrum Disorders as well as Emotional and Behavioral Disorders and Developmental Delays. With a licensed capacity of 39 beds, Bernalillo Academy is accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and is licensed and certified by the New Mexico Department of Children, Youth and Families.
